With its position in the heart of London, Trafalgar Square ranks as the fourth most popular tourist attraction on Earth with more than fifteen million visitors a year.
The name commemorates the Battle of Trafalgar (1805), a British naval victory of the Napoleonic Wars.
At the centre of the square there is Nelson's Column, which is surrounded by fountains and guarded by four lion statues at its base.
The column is topped by a statue of Horatio Nelson, the admiral who commanded the British Fleet at Trafalgar.
Various statues and sculptures are on display in the square, including changing pieces of contemporary art.
Trafalgar Square is also a site of political demonstrations.
